ARU is tailored to the Arab world's context, focusing on criteria that reflect regional priorities while maintaining alignment with global standards.

The ranking assesses universities based on four primary criteria: teaching and learning, scientific research, creativity and innovation, and international and local cooperation and community service. Each criterion encompasses specific indicators to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.

Data for the ranking is collected through a comprehensive process involving multiple sources to ensure accuracy and reliability. Participating universities submit detailed institutional data via the ARU portal supported by evidence, which undergoes rigorous validation by the ARU team. In addition, external databases such as Elsevier and the Arab Impact Factor are leveraged to supplement and cross-verify research performance and impact metrics. This multi-source approach ensures a transparent, consistent, and robust evaluation of all participating institutions.

Arab educational and research universities that grant bachelor's, master's, and/Or doctoral degrees and have published research in internationally indexed journals (e.g., Scopus) are eligible.

Universities can register by providing necessary information through the registration portal, including institutional details and research identifiers.

The results are typically announced annually. For instance, the 2025 evaluation results are scheduled for release in December 2025.

Universities achieving high rankings receive recognition through official announcements, certificates, and potential features in ARU publications and events.
