University of Sharjah

The University of Sharjah (UoS) was established in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. A visionary leader, His Highness aspired to create a distinctive academic institution that would blend Islamic and Arab cultural values with the highest international standards, addressing the educational and developmental needs of the United Arab Emirates and the broader Gulf region.

Since its founding, UoS has steadily expanded to become a cornerstone of academic excellence. On September 11, 2007, the University opened a branch in Khorfakkan to meet the educational demands of the eastern region. On February 28, 2011, the Kalba campus was launched, followed by the inauguration of the University Hospital Sharjah and the University Dental Hospital Sharjah on June 11, 2011, reaffirming the University’s commitment to medical and health sciences. Further expansion came with the opening of the Dhaid campus on December 17, 2015, an advanced educational facility built at a cost of AED 60 million.

To support knowledge and research, a three-story library was inaugurated on the women’s campus on March 24, 2012, followed by a similar library on the men’s campus in 2013. The University added the Fine Arts Library in 2023 and the Medical Library in 2024. Each of these four libraries spans over 10,000 square meters and collectively holds 328,720 printed books, 35 printed journals, 450,000 e-books, 65,000 e-magazines, and access to 123 online databases.

Located in the heart of University City in Sharjah, the University’s main campus is architecturally inspired by Islamic and Arabic traditions and offers multimedia halls, advanced laboratories, modern libraries, student centers, sports complexes, and separate residential facilities for male and female students and faculty.

UoS offers 130 accredited academic programs as of Fall 2024/2025, including 57 bachelor's, 51 master's, 19 doctoral, and 3 professional diploma degrees across a wide range of disciplines. These include medical sciences, engineering, humanities, law, Islamic studies, public policy, the arts, and business administration. The University has built strategic partnerships with over 40 prestigious academic institutions worldwide and maintains an international outlook through its faculty, student body, and collaborative programs.

The Medical and Health Sciences Complex includes the Colleges of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Health Sciences, along with Medical Research Laboratories and teaching hospitals, ensuring excellence in education, research, and service.

Following the visionary leadership of His Highness, the University operated branch campuses in Khorfakkan, Kalba, and Dhaid until the academic year 2023–2024. These were transitioned into independent institutions, each continuing to enrich higher education in the region.
